Tangled Web A-Weavin' (10/8/97)
SceneLink

A faithful viewer gave us an unconfirmed rumor of a disturbing nature. Most of you have probably visited Apple's web site at one time or another. What you may not have known (but probably could have guessed) is that it's run almost entirely by a slew of PowerMacs-- Apple Workgroup Servers, to be exact. This award-winning site is a perfect rebuttal to the old saw that "Macs make lousy web servers." So why, pray tell, is Steve Jobs planning on replacing those Macs with expensive new Sun workstations?

As our cloak-and-dagger source points out, the Macs are handling the site's traffic just fine. Plus, they are easy to administer and incredibly secure. And it's not like the Suns will run Rhapsody or anything. So why?

AtAT's recent server problems notwithstanding, the Mac is an excellent web server platform and we're a little taken aback that Uncle Steve would eliminate one of its best showcases. If anyone in the know can confirm or deny these rumors, you know where to reach us. (We've since seen that Macintouch has posted this rumor, too.)

From the writer/creator of AtAT, a Pandemic Dad Joke taken WAYYYYYY too far

The above scene was taken from the 10/8/97 episode:

October 8, 1997: (Sorry—this was before we started writing intro text for each episode!)

Other scenes from that episode:

  • 63: "It's Not You, It's Me" (10/8/97)   The honeymoon's over: Macintouch has lots of tidbits on the aftermath of the end of licensing as we knew it. After having told Apple to "hit the road," Motorola is dumping all of their Mac OS machines in an attempt to leave the ugly past behind...

  • 65: Sincerest Flattery (10/8/97)   Well, we at AtAT now know that we have officially "arrived." Check out the London Independent article "`Way Cool' Episodes Enliven the Apple Soap Opera" and tell us that we aren't a trend-setter. ;-) It actually is a pretty good article to get a quick overview of the whole Apple situation, but we're not sure it's what we'd call "balanced reporting." We'll let this infraction slide, but if we see a new Apple-based soap opera appear on NBC next week, someone's gonna get sued...

Or view the entire episode as originally broadcast...

DISCLAIMER: AtAT was not a news site any more than Inside Edition was a "real" news show. We made Dawson's Creek look like 60 Minutes. We engaged in rampant guesswork, wild speculation, and pure fabrication for the entertainment of our viewers. Sure, everything here was "inspired by actual events," but so was Amityville II: The Possession. So lighten up.

Site best viewed with a sense of humor. AtAT is not responsible for lost or stolen articles. Keep hands inside car at all times. The drinking of beverages while watching AtAT is strongly discouraged; AtAT is not responsible for damage, discomfort, or staining caused by spit-takes or "nosers."
