Ten Stores, Five Weeks (10/21/02)

No foolin', Jed; that there Retail Train just keeps on chug-chug-chuggin' along, despite maybe having lost a little bit of steam. Why, this past weekend alone Apple opened another new store in Orlando, Florida at the interestingly-spelled Mall at Millenia. If you were geographically unavailable (or you were just too busy learning how to spin pens to show up), as usual, faithful viewer Tad Torborg has photos and video of the event. Judging by the pics of a Foaming Mob™ that was technically more of a "sparse gathering of polite individuals," there's little doubt that Apple retail grand openings are no longer the A-list boogie-all-night shindigs they once were.

Still, though, while attending an Apple retail store opening day event may no longer lead to waking up two days later in a pool of unidentified vomit and wondering what happened to your pants, that's not to say that you shouldn't keep an eye on the ever-growing list of upcoming stores; you never know, one might open up right under your nose. (In which case, you're probably going to want to take a step or two to the left.) And hey, good news: Apple has revamped its entire retail page to accommodate the burgeoning list of happy Apple stores spreading like a nifty and surprisingly pleasant form of eczema across this vast nation. Take a gander, though, and you might just notice a little something missing; the "Coming Soon" section is no more.

Now, don't panic; in the past Apple has removed the section, only to bring it back when a new store was just a week away from its big opening day. But what's particularly interesting about this new setup is that the entire list is peppered with stores that aren't open yet-- ten in all, including firsts for Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Nevada. Not that there are any surprises to people who check Apple's retail jobs page on occasion, which always reveals plenty of store locations that haven't yet been publicly announced... but isn't it odd that said retail jobs page is no longer linked on the newly-revamped retail page? After all, now it's got no beans to spill. Whatever.

Anyway, like we said, there are ten stores listed as "coming soon," but there are no dates posted, so don't go scrambling to launch iCal just yet. However, we're pretty sure that during last week's conference call Apple indicated that it plans to open ten more stores by Thanksgiving, and there are only five more weekends left until then, so we can probably expect a pretty dense schedule. Got your party hat ready?

The above scene was taken from the 10/21/02 episode:

October 21, 2002: The slapfight continues, as IDG hints at possibly banning Apple from the January Macworld Expo unless the company agrees to show up in New York and Boston as well. Meanwhile, Apple announces ten new retail stores due to open within the next five weeks, even as the company's market share dips under the 4% mark-- but not to worry, because we have a cunning plan...

Other scenes from that episode:

  • 3786: Right Back Atcha, Steve (10/21/02)   Christmas in October, that's what it is; there's simply no other way to describe the increasingly entertaining events unfolding over this whole Macworld Expo Boston tussle. What wondrous, life-elevating task did we perform to deserve such a windfall of melodrama?...

  • 3788: So Darn Simple It Can't Fail (10/21/02)   Now, don't panic, people, but as faithful viewer Matt Ball pointed out to us, the research firm IDC issued a press release last week with preliminary market share numbers for computer sales in the third quarter, and based on number of units sold, Apple's not exactly kicking tail out there...
